Merski Dry Goods and Merski Grocery
Memories of Michael Zaksheske
My great grandparents on my mother’s side are Jacob and Walerya Merski. Walerya was the proprietor of Merski Dry Goods.
My grandparents on my mother’s side were Joseph and Antoinette Czerwinski Merski. They ran Merski’s Grocery Store originally on the corner of 4th and Pennsylvania Avenue. They moved the store to the corner of 5th and Pennsylvania Avenue.
Antoinette was the child of John and Catherine Bujnowski Czerwinski and grew up on the 400 block of East 19th Street.
Joseph Merski was the second child of Jacob and Walerya Merski and was born in 1905.
My mother, Ruth Merski Zaksheske attended St. Casimir’s School and East High School. She is in the picture of the 8th Grade Graduating Class of St. Casimir’s 1947.
My father, Vernon Zaksheske, was born in Menominee Michigan and moved to Erie with his parents, John and Frances Grabowski Zaksheske. In 1941.
My grandmother’s parents, Alex and Anna Grabowski initially immigrated to Erie in 1906. I believe they were among the first parishioners at Holy Trinity Church. Alex and Anna moved from Erie to Marinette Wisconsin area in the 1920’s.
Upon my grandparent’s return to Erie, they resided on East 12th Street near Reed and my father attended St. Stan’s School and Cathedral Prep. He is in the St. Stan’s Graduating Class of 1946 picture. (See St. Stanislaus School Section.)
My parents, Vernon and Ruth Zaksheske purchased a home at 509 East 23rd Street and I attended Holy Trinity School and Cathedral Prep.
